So Many Online Channels To Worry About

As I was recently posting my first Facebook and Twitter messages from my blackberry I got to think about the many channels available to our kids to get online material. It is staggering with mobile phones, iTouch, Blackberry and of course the home computer. We really do need to be vigilant in protecting our children from the online dangers this represents. The best tool by far that I have come across for home computing is the PGKey and thankfully, the manufacturers are working on a Mac version and a version for mobile devices as well.
The interesting thing about the PGKey is that it changes behaviours and this got me thinking again. Could the PGKey be of benefit to small businesses as well? The answer I feel is a resounding yes. If any small business owner is concerned about the internet habits of their employees, the PGKey is a very cost effective answer for them.
What we should all do is start to lobby PGKey (twitter account pgkeyuk) to make the Mac and mobile versions as soon as possible. Let's protect everybody that needs protecting as quickly as we can.

Can PG Key Block Unwanted Websites?

Yes. PG Key starts by referencing a universal black list of sites that are known to host damaging spyware or other unwanted content. Parents can add sites to this list from www.pgkey.com as they see fit. These settings are available from your private user account. If your kid visits a site that you don’t feel is appropriate, you’ll know about it, and you can easily make sure it doesn’t happen again.

More importantly, PG key reminds kids that you – the parent - is now informed of their online activities. If they wouldn’t do it with you over their shoulder, they won’t do it while PG Key is in.

What is PG Key and how does it protect my kids from online dangers?

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies have made specific recommendations to keep kids safe online. Parenting experts agree with this advice. The best way to keep kids safe online is for parents to be aware and involved in their children’s online activities. That’s why you’re told to keep computers in a common area of the house.

PG Key is a new, simple to use, all in one solution that lets parents follow the best advice from the experts. It’s a key. Just plug it into the USB port of your kids or family computer and PG Key provides 3 areas of protection.
1) PG Key puts parents in control. It allows parents to control when their kids use the computer. Remove the key and the computer can’t be used.
2) PG Key locks in Safe Search content filtering. The approach of "white list" site blocking is too restrictive, and normally becomes so inconvenient and frustrating that parents disable it – PG Key Safe Search content filtering allows the freedom to search the web, but prevents most of the unwanted and dangerous content from showing up.
3) PG Key creates accountability. Once kids know that their parents are no longer excluded from their "online lives" their behavior changes. That’s why the FBI and parenting experts recommend parental involvement as the best way to reduce on-line dangers. PG Key implements several parental control and notification features so that kids know they need to behave like they would in any other part of their life - where there are consequences to inappropriate behavior.

More Reasons Why Parents Need The PG Key to Protect Their Kids Online

Yesterday we gave ten reasons why parents should consider protecting their children online by using the PG Key. Today we provide a few more alarming facts:
1. One in five children have been solicited sexually online.
2. Two out of seventeen children have been harassed, threatened, or bullied.
3. One third of children have been contacted by a stranger and half of these were considered inappropriate.
4. Most children or teenagers will not report inappropriate Internet contact to their parents because they are afraid of losing Internet privileges.
5. Nine out of ten parents will never know that any inappropriate contact has occurred.

We all know that there are dangers out there and as responsible parents we know we need to do something to protect our children from the undesirable aspects of the internet. Ten Reasons Why Every Parent Needs The PG Key

The Internet is a fabulous place but it can be dangerous.
Many studies have shown that British children are becoming more and more exposed to the undesirable side of the internet. Here are a few statistics that were recently shared by Anna Richardson on the Channel 4 TV Show - 'Sex Education versus Pornography'

1. There are now 16 million internet connections in UK homes
2. A third of British teenagers learn about sex from pornography
3. The UK has the highest number of teenage problems in Europe
4. 21 British teenage girls every day get pregnant
5. 1 in 10 British teenagers have a sexually transmitted disease
6. There are 400 million pages of pornography on the internet many with free access
7. The average British teenager spends 90 minutes a week watching pornography
8. The average British teenager spends 2-3 hours a day on the internet
9. 90% of British children stumble on porn accidentally
11.77% of British teenagers think their parents have no idea that they watch porn

Even The PM Accepts We Need A PG Key

Even the prime minister accepts that the UK has an internet safety issue that parents are best placed to address. Unfortunately in typical style he doesn't offer any solutions. Here is what he said:
“We want to help children and young people to make the most of what all digital and interactive technologies can offer. By putting in place the right support for children, young people and parents we can reduce much of the anxiety that exists around the internet.”
Gordon Brown, Prime Minister.
Thankfully PG Key is available now to help parents protect their kids online. Visit the webpage for more details.

Keep Our Kids Safe On-line

If you are a parent or grandparent and you own a computer, you are probably concerned about the dangers of the internet. What would you give to keep your children safe by effectively putting yourself in control of their internet activity without having to constantly stand over their shoulders?

I recently returned to the UK having spent ten years in Tucson Arizona. During my sojourn in the desert sun I agreed to be the head coach of my daughter’s football team. That’s where I first met Paul Ranheim, the father of one of the other girls on the team. Paul is also one of the directors of Tucson based PG Key LLC. When Paul and I touched base again a few weeks ago and he mentioned what his company is doing to protect American kids from the perils of the internet, I got really excited. The UK has a huge problem with internet security and I immediately offered to spread the word about the PG Key in the UK.

Most of the dangers to kids online can’t be prevented with web filters and site blocking software. That’s the conclusion of the recent report from the Internet Safety Technical Task Force that included representatives from MySpace, Google Inc., AOL and Facebook Inc.

Task force member, Attorney General Roy Cooper of North Carolina said in his recent interview "Clearly, the main responsibility is on parents."

This conclusion mirrors what parenting experts and law enforcement officials have been advising - Parents must be vigilant and involved in their children’s daily internet use.

In the UK, a recent Channel 4 documentary called ‘Sex Education versus Pornography’ saw host Anna Richardson ask computer manufacturers, distributors, retailers and even the government what can be done to protect our children and the answer was unanimous in laying the responsibility firmly on the shoulders of parents. Thankfully, the PG Key makes it easier for parents to undertake that responsibility.

Advice of experts and parents used to develop PG Key

The developers of the PG Key assembled law enforcement professionals, parenting experts, concerned parents, and even kids themselves to gain a clearer understanding of the technical and parenting challenges faced by today’s high-tech families.

Some of the greatest concerns from parents were the dangers of cyber-bullying, online messaging with strangers, and the problems that arise when inappropriate information and pictures are posted on kids social networking sites. These problems in particular are difficult or impossible to prevent with existing filtering products.

While the parents interviewed all agreed with the strategy of monitoring as the most effective way to prevent these dangers, they repeatedly expressed the need for a simpler and more complete method to create the safe environment being advised. PG key allows parents to simulate the environment that would otherwise require the impracticality of constant supervision.

PG Key helps fight tough internet dangers

PG Key plugs into any USB port on the computer in use. Similar to a car key, the key must be inserted in order for the child to "drive" onto the internet. When PG Key is in the computer, a combination of content filters, activity recording and alert notifications are enabled for the internet session. These features allow parents to enforce the rules they set for their kids' safe computer use.

PG Key creates a recording of the activities that occur on the kid’s computer – like recording your favorite TV show. You can "play back" up to 60 hours of computer activity and actually see what was happening. You can watch on the same computer, or simply plug PG key into any other system. Fast forwarding and scrolling through the video is as easy as controlling your DVD player.

PG Key is available now

PG Key is available online from www.pgkey.co.uk. Requirements and product details can be found on the website. A version for Mac and a similar product for mobile devices are currently in development and due for release soon.

PG Key gets my vote as the best way that parents can protect their children from the dangers of the internet.
